Microsoft will be late to party again with 2012 tablet

You’d think as ginormous and innovative as a company like Microsoft has been in the past, that they would be a little quicker on the draw with the latest tablet and smartphone devices, and offering a little bigger competitive fight than what we’ve seen in the last few years.  But here we go again.  After entering the smartphone and mobile OS business recently with Windows Phone 7 and sort of falling back on their heals in the face of Google and Apple, Bloomberg is now reporting that Microsoft won’t have an iPad or Android OS tablet competitor until fall of 2012.  Around that time, there will be at least 100 tablets out on the market to choose from.

It’s said that Microsoft will start testing a new version of Windows publicly at the end of this year with partners and customers, and that new version is reported to be more tailored to touchscreens. It will also feature battery life optimizations to allow for minimal power drain on portable devices. Microsoft has had no relative success in the tablet market despite its attempts to try and create the category dating back many years ago.
