Nokia Announces the 808 PureView Smartphone with a 41MP Camera (video)

Nokia just announced the  Nokia 808 PureView at the Mobile World Conference.  This smartphone features an enormous 41-megapixel sensor that is capable of capturing some amazing pictures.

Although it’s a 41 megapixel sensor, the maximum you can use is 38 megapixels. As the resolution is so high, you can easily take a large picture and then just crop to the part you want while still having an extremely detailed picture available at the end.

The smartphone uses Carl Zeiss optics, and also uses Nokia’s own developed algorithms to process pictures.

The 808 PureView can capture pictures at 2/3, 5 and 8 megapixels if needed, and by choosing to shoot this way, digital zoom can be used without losing any clarity as there’s more megapixels that can fill in the gaps rather than cutting them out and making the image look blocky.

The device also has superior low-light performance, and can compact images down so that they can be more easily emailed and shared with people.

The camera can capture at 1080p and also has 4x lossless zoom thanks to the huge amount of megapixels available.

“Nokia PureView imaging technology sets a new industry standard by whatever measure you use,” said Jo Harlow, executive vice president of Nokia Smart Devices. “People will inevitably focus on the 41 megapixel sensor, but the real quantum leap is how the pixels are used to deliver breath-taking image quality at any resolution and the freedom it provides to choose the story you want to tell.”

Although cameras on smartphones are getting better, there’s still a long way to go, but Nokia has raised the camera-smartphone bar by about 4-times.

Spec-wise, it runs the Symbian Bella operating system, uses a single core processor clocked at 1.3GHz and has a 4-inch screen with a 360 x 640 resolution (nHD).   Additionally, it contains 512MB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Storage can also be increased by microSD which is a good thing when dealing with photos that are so large.
