Acer is planning to strengthen their smartphone presence by releasing six new models in 2013. Five of the models will be based on Google’s Android operating system and one on Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 platform. The company’s high-end models will be equipped with Qualcomm’s (QCOM) dual-core CPUs while the entry-level models will feature chipsets from MediaTek.
Acer will sell its smartphones in Europe through existing sales channels, while in emerging markets such as Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and India. The company will look to target the entry-level to mid-range markets rather than the high-end segment. Acer will outsource the production of its smartphones to Qisda and Compal Communications. The company did not reveal plans to enter the U.S. smartphone market.
