The Samsung HU9000 has tons of elements that make for a state-of-the-art TV system….a killer design, stunning 4K imagery, beautiful color production, and a curved design that brings everything to realistic life. At first glance, it’s a “beut”, with futuristic styling, and it also brings a whole host of new and improved games, and a touchpad/cursor-equipped Samsung Smart Control that offers a PC-like web browsing experience.
Samsung HU9000 Curved TV Design
The 65-inch Samsung HU9000 Curved TV, lesser known as the UN65HU9000, is the first UHD 4K TV to utilize the curved screen, which initially appeared on Samsung and LG’s 55-inch OLEDs. The screen bezel is pretty thin, the curved back has standard VESA type spacing for standard wall mounting, and the bend only adds around 2.5-inches to it’s depth.
The HU9000 uses the 2014 Samsung One-Connect box, which houses the nerve-center of the display, including Smart TV functionality, GUI, signal processing and all inputs, (which include 4 HDMI 2.0 jacks, 3 USB connectors, 1 RF antenna input, Wi-Fi, 2 composite AV inputs and 1 Component video input.) A single 9-ft. interconnect cable is run from the box to the display. The curved screen itself provides noticeable improvement to angle-viewing, and when the eyes are dead-center, it literally rivals IMAX and 3D technology, widening the optimal viewing area.
Features and Performance
The Samsung HU9000 Curved TV has a rich image feature-set, including cinema black, HDMI 2.o, local dimming, UHD 4K resolution, HEVC/H.265 decoding, HDCP 2.2, advanced Smart TV features, an all new advanced remote, voice and face recognition with customization, and an advanced guide. The company’s latest PurColor circuit analyzes 127 color points for more accurate reproduction, and the 3D feature provides excellent quality and great depth, (Samsung includes 4 pairs of active glasses.) It also has much better signal processing.
The smart remote for the Samsung HU9000 Curved TV is very cool, combining a tiny form factor, a tilt-sensor for the cursor, and a touch pad to scroll up/down, and hard buttons to move left, right, top and bottom. A conventional full size RC unit is also included.
The Samsung HU9000 Curved TV uses a 3840 x 2160 resolution LCD panel with edge-lit LEDs, which can be set for local dimming, and Samsung includes a built-in HDTV camera for hand gesture control, facial recognition and Skype video calls. There’s also voice control, enabling personalization for up to 20 persons’ preferences. Pretty damn cool!
The motion resolution with the 120 Hz Auto Motion Plus comes in at full 1080 lines PPH, matching plasma quality. White and color uniformity is also excellent.
We viewed a wide mix of source material including Blue-ray, DirecTV and Netflix HD, and the picture quality on all mediums is simply outstanding. Additionally, calibrating the Cineam Black and the local dimming on the Samsung HU9000 Curved TV, caused the picture to blast out mammoth detail, excellent tones and rich uniform colors.
The Samsung HU9000 Curved TV also provides a sense of depth unlike any LED LCD display we’ve seen, and Native 720p content, which requires a UHD 4K TV to create 8 pixels for each original, appears super crisp and sharp .

The HU9000’s audio is no slouch either. While most thin TVs offer bad sound quality, we were pleasantly surprised with the sound, thanks to the Clear Voice audio setting, which made dialog very clear. With a large number of controls to enhance and manipulate sound, the HU9000 also offers wireless connection to many of its soundbars, providing easy connection and much better dynamic range.
Bottom Line
Choosing a main TV for the home used to be simple, but not anymore. So much technology to consider, but Samsung’s UN65HU9000 should definitely be at the top of the consideration list. In our minds, there’s really no better performing UHD4K TV than this one….hands down. The Samsung runs around $4000.
