It seems that Amazon is looking to build a home robot at a hardware division known as Lab126. It would be a domestic droid, code-named “Vesta”, and apparently the project has been in development for some time. Lately, Amazon is starting to aggressively hire roboticists, and it’s suspected that the first tests of Vesta, in select employees’ homes, will come at the end of this year.
It’s also thought that Vesta could become a sort of roaming Echo, following you around the house waiting for you give it commands. The device would likely take advantage in advances in autonomous movement that have helped push self-driving car tests.
All of this news is just rumors at this point, but the sources are somewhat reliable. Of course with home robots, you run into privacy and security implications, not to mention the high costs of development.
