Apple is planning to revamp its Shortcuts app by integrating Apple Intelligence, its proprietary AI framework, according to a report from Bloomberg.
For those unfamiliar, the Shortcuts app enables you to create “shortcuts” or custom workflows from your favorite apps to automate tasks you do regularly on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This includes a variety of actions from sending texts to controlling smart home devices, among other actions. The app came with Apple’s acquisition of Workflow in 2017 and was then rebranded as Shortcuts the following year.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new version of the Shortcuts app that Apple is working on will allow users to seamlessly create actions thanks to the integration of Apple Intelligence. With the help of advanced AI models, users will be able to set voice commands using natural language. This should make the process of creating shortcuts easier and less intimidating for casual users.
Currently, Microsoft already has Copilot+ for Windows, which works in a similar fashion. For macOS, third-party apps such as TaskGPT provide an equivalent experience, but Apple Intelligence currently lacks an AI tool with comparable functionality. This is primarily because Siri has not been upgraded yet to leverage large language models (LLMs)—something the company is planning to improve on soon.
The revamp to the Shortcuts app was reportedly planned to be released sometime this year. However, due to internal delays, Apple may only end up bringing it to iOS users in 2026, so it’s possible that it won’t be featured in macOS 26 as well as iOS/iPadOS 26 when those devices launch still in September this year.
